We set a grated basin at the lowest point where water gathers, then connect it to solid pipe that runs at a steady slope to an outlet. Surface drains handle water on top of the ground; for water that soaks the soil below, we often pair them with a French drain. On one commercial job our crew trenched and laid new pipe, set a catch basin, and rebuilt the beds around it with the flowering ixora left untouched.
A surface drain catches water that’s sitting on top of the ground through a grate. A French drain collects water that has soaked into the soil. Many yards need both, and we’ll tell you which fits your problem.
Grates sit flush with the ground or paving and are placed where they’re least noticeable. In beds they can be tucked between plants.
